Homelink Christmas 2009

Beginning of School Year Mass

The Mass to mark the beginning of the new school year was celebrated on 8th October.  Fr. O’Hanlon, School Chaplain, was the celebrant.  Senior pupils read the passages chosen for the day and the whole school joined in the singing.  A word of thanks to all who prepared and took part in the Mass.
Advent
Assemblies for Junior classes and Senior classes have been held over Advent.  The Advent Wreath candles were lit and symbols hung on the Jesse Tree each Friday. The stories behind these symbols and other relevant Christmas customs were told.
Missions
The weekly collection for “Children Helping Children” continues throughout the school each Monday morning.  The boys in 2nd  class (First Holy Communion class) make this collection each week – a job they eagerly look forward to doing! To date this year we have collected €235 which has been forwarded to the Society of Missionary Children

Carol Service

Picture
The Carol Service will be held in St. Mary’s Church on Tuesday morning 22nd December at 11.15pm.  All classes will partake in the singing and the action parts will be performed by 3rd class.  The narrators will be from 6th class and solo singers from various classes.  A special word of thanks to Ms. Ginnell and Ms. Walsh for preparing the 3rd class and to all the other teachers for their preparation over Advent.

Sacraments
2nd class will be making their First Holy Communion on 15th May while 6th class will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on April 15th.  In preparation for this, both classes had their Enrolment Ceremonies during the last term.

Scoil Naomh Mhuire Choir

When we had all settled into our new classes, auditions for the school choir took place in October.  We were delighted to discover lots of fine voices and welcomed many new members into the choir and hope to have space for some future additions.

We have acquired lovely new folders for our repertoire and we are busy practicing for events which will take place in 2010.

Swimming

The boys of 3rd and 5th class are now enjoying the delights of learning to swim in Mayfield Swimming Pool.  They started on November 18th and are enjoying their weekly excursions every Wednesday afternoon.  1st and 4th will begin swimming lessons in February.

French

Every Wednesday and Friday the boys of 5th and 6th class become a little bit more continental as they embrace the French language.  This year however they are not just learning vocabulary and verbs – they are also learning the uniquely French Christmas carol “Petit Papa Noel”.

Mobile Phone Collection.

Picture
We have had a great response to our recent mobile phone collection for the Jack & Jill Foundation.  We currently have collected 250 phones.  Our school will get an Interactive White Board if we collect 300 phones or a board with digital projector if we collect 500, so keep them coming and make sure to ask all those who get a new phone from Santa, for their old one!!!

ICT Grant
As part of the recent funding for ICT equipment, we are currently looking at putting fixed short throw digital projectors into each classroom.  These should be in place in the next term.
Army Demonstration
Scoil Mhuire Naofa Junior Infant classes were treated to an exciting slideshow from Sergeant Dominic Rooney (Collins Barracks) on November 19th.  Recently returned from UN duty overseas in Kosovo, Sergeant Rooney showed the boys pictures of the important work done by the Irish troops out there.  The boys also got a chance to try out some army equipment, ranging from gas masks to rucksacks and helmets.  This visit followed one last year by Corporal Ian Delaney who had returned from UN duties in Chad and also provided our infant classes with a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting talk and slideshow.  Collins Barracks will definitely have some enthusiastic new recruits in the future !!!.
Cork Pops Orchestra
Rang 4, Rang 5 and Rang 6 were delighted to attend “Beat the Blues” with Evelyn Grant and the Cork Pops Orchestra at City Hall, Cork.  The boys listened to a wide range of music and joined in with the Spirituals Medley – “I wish I knew how it would feel to be free”, “Down the river” and “This little Light”.  We were even joined by “Gorilla” on the Cello!! The concert is designed to support the Primary School Music curriculum and the boys saw a wide variety of instruments.  A great day out was had by all.
Table Quiz

An enormous Scoil Mhuire Naofa Thank You to our wonderful Parents Association who organised a fund raising table quiz.  There was a gala raffle on the night for some fantastic prizes which was very well supported.  Comhghairdeas to na múinteoirí who won first prize after a nail biting sudden death round!  A total of €1,627 was raised on the night.  A sincere thank you to all for your continued support.
Athletics
Well done to our athletics team who did very well at the Cork Sports on Wednesday 30th September in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. All the lads did the school proud by doing their best. Daniel Ciolacu (Rang 2) won his heat, but was pipped at the post in the final. Sean Hoare (Rang 6) ran a great race and took second place. Our relay team also did very well coming in second place. Well done to all.  Thanks also to Mr. Foley and Mr. Bowen  who attended the sports with the lads.
